Re-Design My Sketchbook

This morning, I felt bored with my own sketchbook's cover, so I tried to paste some boards on it.

Now it has a beige cover, which I think is more natural :)

Moreover, I paste some color paper in my book, let's see what will I get.

Chinese Design Master (3)

Kan Tai Keung

Mr Kan Tai Keung is one of the greatest HK graphic designers in the 20th Century, he started to work as a graphic designer in 1957, and he is still active in design activities. Today, his reputation is well established.

1)

Beijing Olympic Posters

To celebrate the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Mr. Kan designed a series of posters.
These posters are designed by ink brushes and chinese rulers. Mr Kan said that rulers represents a standard, and that's why he loves using rulers in his design jobs. As his regular style, he use brush strokes to create the human shapes.

I like these posters as the brush strokes shows the movement of the body, and it is neat and tidy. Moreover, it is the Beijing Olympic, therefore using the brush stroke is a very good way to link up with the topic.

2)

Heritage Posters

These posters are designed to match the traditional Chinese symbol with contemporary design style.
Once again, he used brush strokes and rulers to form the poster. This time it is placed vertical, and these three posters each represent a tree. They are pine tree, bamboo, and blossom. In Chinese, they are called the friends of winter, as they can stay strong in cold weather.

I like these 3 posters as they shares the same stroke, but they differentiates and have different tone and manner. The pine tree is cool, and the bamboo is hard, and the blossom is warm.

Moutain (Not Moutain)

This is a painting painted by Mr Kan. In this painting, he is doing both calligraphy and also painting.
The form of all the paintings are the chinese character 山, it means mountain.
When we look at the painting from far distance, we can read the word. If we move close to the painting, we can see the detail scenery of the mountain.
The way that Mr Kan played with the portion of the objects creates 2 ways of viewing the image, and it brings more insight to the viewers.

All of the above pictures are from Kan & Lau Design Consultant Ltd.

People who inspire me (2)

 Pak Seung Chuen

A HK conceptual artist, his artwork may not be shown in museums or exhibited, however he can make a journey, or many things that we do not aware into artworks.

3692
plastic sheet
13cm x 15cm

To contain the spread of SARS, property management companies place a plastic sheet on the combination lock at the entrance of buildings. They have it cleaned and changed on a regular basis. This is a used plastic sheet, bearing traces of residents' comings and goings. 3692 is the entry code for the building. (Amazingly, password was molded on the lock!) The box contains the plastic sheets of the other five blocks in the housing estate. - Pak Seung Chuen

As Pak Seung Chuen said, the plastic is not made by him, it is made by people who are using the number pad.
However, we seldom treat the number pad as a possible piece of art. Surprisingly, the password, is molded on the sheet, and Pak has helped us to discover more in our daily lives.

Mark Six: win/ church

Mark Six is a gambling game. You need to give six marks on each game. Each ticket contains 4 games (24 marks). You can use these 24 marks to draw a sign or a symbol. - Pak Seung Chuen

In the above work, Pak has shown us how can we find out art in some details of our lives. The Mark 6 sheet itself is simply a paper with some dots, we can simply joint the dots and draw. It tells me that what we see may not be used in the way we think. It matters with how people use it.

Valleys Trip

Map:東京23區(1:10,000 / 2006-1 Edition)
Period:27-28/2, 1-2/3, 5/3/2007
* I walked vertically from p1 to p296, total 24 pages.

I opened a map book. Then, I walked along all the gaps* between the left pages and the right pages in it, from the south to the north Tokyo. The pages are arched like 2 mountains and the gap is craved in like a valley. I stood and took photos at every points that were crossed the valleys. - Pak Seung Chuen

The above art couldn't give me any impact on visual. However, it is a very good demonstration of how to blind our odd thinking, and try to open our creative side. With going vertically on the map, we see different combination of things. They may be not related at all, however, they can all be link up by the vertical line on a map.

HK Artist who I like (1)

Siu Hak

A HK based Illustrator, who graduated in the School Of Design in the HK Polytechnic University.
He worked as a freelance illustrator after he graduates, and he has a special comic column in the" 東touch Magazine" for over 4 years.

Distinctive Works

1) The Deaf Panda

http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2097/16lq.jpg

It is a story about a panda and a girl who were both waiting for the Cat Bus which appeared in the "Totoro". The girl asked the panda whether it is the right station to wait for the bus. However, the panda misunderstood and made a laughter. This is a story that shaped the personality of the Deaf Panda's personality, and it is a milestone of the after Deaf Panda stories.

This comic is simple, and it gives very good entertainment to the readers. Moreover, as a illustrator, I see how Siu Hak shaped the character's personality through a story. The storyline is simple, however it gives a large space for him to express the "Deaf" personality of the Deaf Panda.

2)This Side > The Other Side <<這邊箱>那邊箱>>

This story is about the attitude of dating of many HK people.
This is a story with 2 sides. One side is the female side, another side is the male side.
In the female side, the woman was always thinking that she has no attractiveness, and she will not meet her love in the future. In the other side, the man was actually pretending to be a good man, however he was thinking how to get close with other women other than his girlfriend.

This story wrote how does HK people feel about their dating status.
HK men are always searching for better partners than their current one,
and HK women are lacking self confidence of themselves.
I love this story as the author wrote what I really think, and it is a fact in my life.

3) The Victoria Harbor Stars 維港巨星

http://forgemind.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=13301

This series of comic is called the Victoria Harbor Stars.
The characters are no longer animals, and they are the buildings standing in the coast of the Victoria Harbor. Siu Hak gave them different personalities, and the buildings become something like the transformers.

In this series of comic, it had many stories mocking the HK government short sighted policies, and some ridiculous stories based on these characters. As these buildings all have different backgrounds, they represent different people in the society. For example, the HSBC building signifies the Banking Sector of HK, and the Central Library signifies the Culture Sector of HK.
